View Article  We're back

For those of you who we didn't stay with/invade, we are back from our trip to Scotland.

The trip was a great success, not least of all because we all coped with the flights okay - apart from a minor issue with Adam being ill on the approach into Bangkok airport but after both incidents, within about half an hour he was back to his usual self again - we were calling him Adam, the friendly ghost as he was more than just a little bit pale.

Although we didn't go to Scotland for the weather, we could have done with a touch less rain - it pretty much rained solidly for three weeks - wettest August since records began apparently!

Hope you like Adam and Colin's matching tops!!

For those lovely people that have visited us, you may have noticed that EVERY wall in our house is white - the one thing about renting that kills me, I can't randomly decide one weekend that our bedroom should be painted another colour -anyhooo, months ago, we bought "stickers" to decorate our very white house, and, as Emily would say, Ma Daaaa

All I need to do now is to work out how to get rid of the horrible vertical blinds

Colin finally made it to the Scottish butcher today and bought haggis - real haggis, not wrapped in plastic! - and more excitingly, tattie scones
View Article  Background
To give those that don't know a bit of background to Colin's maternity leave (what I am calling it). Colin has not been enjoying his job for quite a few months and I am still really enjoying mine, as well as having plenty of work on so that I had been working long days. As well as us, the kids were finding daycare and school tiring with them and us exhausted by Fridays.

We had tried to make this change at the end of 2007, however, it was only after some discussions with my migration department that we found out we couldn't transfer our visa to my name as the Australian government required me to be working full-time. It took until March for my contract to be changed to be full time so from the beginning of April, both Colin and I worked full time whilst we re-applied for visas, this time with me as the main name. We had a slight hiccup as we had to get x-rays again (and medicals for the kids), and unfortunately Adam happend to have a little bug, so he "failed" the medical so had to go to our doctor to get some lab tests to confirm he was not about to use all the Australian medical services (I managed to restrain myself from pointing out that he had an Australian illness!!).

After all that, we got the visas approved - took about 10 weeks in total - and Colin talked things through with his boss and arranged his sabbatical - he returns to work at the beginning of March - if both he and his employer want it!!

I started my 6 month sabbatical on Friday. Very exciting for me and the kids. We hope that with their shorter school day and some more attention from us that they will become less grumpy, (making us less grumpy in the process)... or at least that's the plan.

Last Saturday our neighbours, (Walter, Santo and their son Ethan), invited us next door for an afternoon drink. As seems to be with our track record with neighbours we ended up staying and drinking until late evening.
View Article  FIrst Day of Footy Training
On Friday afternoon at 5pm I took Adam to his first training session with the wanderers. After initial reluctance to take part, he quickly got over his nerves and was running, tackling and passing his way through the session.

He is in the Under 6's Red team, with about 10 other kids. They play 8 to a side on a small pitch with modified goals and far fewer rules. They have no scrums and things like forward passes and knock-ons just get waved play on. They also allow the coach on the pitch to help them all through it and also to make sure that everyone gets a shot.

With Denny and Steve only in town for a week, we couldn't do the extended tour but just the highlights - the city, Harbour bridge, Opera house, Bondi beach, some 'roo on a BBQ, the QVB and the zoooooooooo

View Article  Changeover day
In what we thought was quite good luck, Mum and Jennifer were due to leave the day after Denny and Steve (our final (known) visitors for 2008) arrived, however, the Fagash sisters managed to be quite blonde and were actually due to leave the same day as Denny and Steve arrived!

Emily and I went at 6.30am to pick up our final visitors and then Adam, Emily and I dropped Mum and Jennifer off, about 10 hours later!!
View Article  A day at the races
On Easter Monday, we had a (nearly) girls day out at the races - some friends from work had arranged to go - any excuse to get dressed up so Mum, Jennifer and I thought it would be fun.

In the end, it was great fun - we all had a flutter and all had pretty rubbish success - not surprising given our selection criteria were names of the horses and the colour of their silks.
View Article  On the beach
Whilst Mum and Jennifer were here (aka the Fagash sisters), the weather was pretty glorious so we managed to visit a few beaches - the first was Palm beach - we were negligent parents and left  Emily in nursery so we could have a peaceful drive up the coast to jump the waves. Only Mum and Colin were willing to brave the relatively chilly water:

Mum and Jennifer made it to Bondi on their own and we rounded off their last weekend with a fabulous day at Balmoral beach - Balmoral is near Mosman but is very family friendly as there are no waves.

We also visited a fabulous little restaurant for lunch and managed to get one of the few photos with all of us

View Article  David's failed attempt to get on two TV programs
In case you haven't heard, David did his best to get on two local TV programs - Bondi Rescue and RPA.

On his way through Heathrow, David injured his heel (not so badly that he couldn't walk, but in retrospect, he probably shouldn't have been walking).  About 10 days later we went to Bondi and David succeeded in properly injuring himself, so much so that I had to ask the nice lifeguard on a quad bike to help us get off the beach. (The life guard was one of the people that appears in Bondi Rescue  - we didn't get filmed although the cameras were at the surf rescue tower).

After a little bit (?!?) of discussion, I dropped David and Sally off at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and again failed to be filmed (RPA is like city hospital but on weekly).

Final result is that David has ruptured his Achilles tendon, is in a plaster to his knee and has a wheelchair to help him around.

The good news is that we now know all the wheelchair accessible sites in Sydney!!

Sorry, for not blogging recently but we have been quite busy. The main thing keeping us busy, apart from our visitors, is getting used to our new routine.

Colin drops the kids off at school in the morning and I jump on my scooter to go into work. I have found there is a magic 20 minute period where if I leave between 7.40 and 8, then I am in the office in 15 minutes but if I leave after that, it takes 30-60(!) minutes to get in!!! As I am in the office so early, I manage to leave on time so I can pick Adam up before 6 and then Emily before 6.30.

View Article  Last few days
Oli and Colin left on Wednesday (boo) but still managed to keep themselves busy - they had a few days in Newcastle visiting more friends then on Saturday we all went into the city to see the first day of the Festival events - which, it has to be said, were a bit rubbish - a woman teaching children how to ceilidh dance (we resisted the urge to join in), a stall showing you how to make origami cranes (the bird, not the machinery) and then some bouncy castle-type things which Adam and Emily loved.

One of the bouncy-castle things was sloped that the kids could climb up and then roll down, except part of the structure ripped and a whole load of children all fell into the gap . . . including Adam who was upside down at the bottom!! Colin and another Dad then stood at either end of the gap pulling children out. No-one was hurt but Adam was quite upset about it all - understandably seeing as he had about 10 bigger children falling on top of him!!!!

On Sunday we had a BBQ for about 15 people - should have been a few more but quite a few people dropped out at the last moment - it was good fun and, as ever, we were left with a ton of food!

For their final full day, we all went to the zoo, including Colin W (the whole two Colin thing did get quite confusing at times!), after Oli & Colin had done some shopping and we visited Emily's new nursery - the nursery is literally next door to Adam's school and brand new (it opened on the 7th Jan) and thankfully, appears fabulous.

Before Oli & Colin got their flight, we had one essential tourist site to visit: Harry's Cafe De Wheels for "brunch" of pie, mash and mushy peas - well actually only Colin "pig-bin" Gemmill had one.

View Article  They're here
Oli & Colin arrived on Sunday (their luggage arrived on Monday) and we nearly killed them by trying to keep them active and showing them some of the main tourist bits in the city.

They have left us already - gone to Brisbane but they are back on Saturday - they were meant to return on Sunday but we are such good hosts they changed their flight.

View Article  Tat part 2
Thanks to the Royal Mail and their postmen taking offense to being asked to actually work the number of hours they were paid for, Mum and Dad's anniversary card and Dave's piece of Tat took about 3-4 weeks to arrive.

I big thank you to the posties!!!

Anyway, I can now reveal to totally useless piece of authentic Australian rubbish that I sent to Dave as a reward for his astute guesswork.

If you are not sure what it is.....  its a genuine crocodile foot fashioned into a back scratcher.  Told you it was useless tat. There is so much tat to buy I will post another quiz when I think of a good teaser question.

Not so much guess the right answer but give us good suggestions . . . we have been invited to a Halloween party and need suggestions as to what to go as - it is an American who is hosting so it will be a full-on Halloween event!

Had a small shock this afternoon when my colleague came to say that there had been a terrorist attack in Glasgow but forgot to tell me that no-one was hurt - after franticly checking the internet, I found the full story - got to love the BBC website - but I hope I never have to read Glasgow terror attack headlines again.
